Steps to Do Credit Repair Yourself

It is important in today’s society to establish good credit. If you have good credit, then your credit score is high and positive things will happen for you, such as low interest on credit cards and loans and the ability to be approved to buy a home or a car. However, if you have a low credit score, like many Americans today, you will have high interest on credit card and loan payments and could possibly be turned down for purchasing a house or a car. If you are in the second group just mentioned, with a low credit score, there is hope for you. You could pay someone to help you fix your credit, or you could do the credit repair yourself for free.

There are several steps you need to take in order to do the credit repair yourself:

-Get a copy of your credit report from the three major bureaus, Experian, Trans Union, and Equifax

-Check your credit report for any mistakes or false debts.

-Dispute the mistakes or false debts by calling and writing certified letters to the businesses that have reported the inaccuracies to the credit bureaus. (Make sure to send evidence to support the mistake such as, written agreements or receipts with the certified letter.)

-Send letters and proof of payments such as receipts or copies of cleared checks to collection agencies

-Send a copy of the letter for every disputed item to all three of the national credit bureaus.

-Pay off any outstanding balances you have on your credit report by putting yourself on a payment plan that you can accomplish.

If you can be self-reliant in doing the credit repair yourself and will accomplish the steps above, your credit report will improve over time.

If you do the credit repair yourself, after you have completed the steps above, be sure to continually do two things:

1.Keep comprehensive files of your disputes, phone and written, as well as any agreements made.

2.Call the credit bureau to check on the progress of your disputes. (Make sure you have your reference number for these phone calls).
