By Mike Martin

Once considered a positive step for people seeking to repair their credit, credit repair counseling has suffered from reports of deceptive actions by unscrupulous agencies. Credit counselors who have misled clients and abused the system have given credit counseling a bad name. Many experts now advice consumers to take control of their own credit repair process. They recommend against sharing personal financial information with a credit repair company, noting that this information may be misused in the future.

Most consumers do not understand that credit repair agencies can assist with debt reduction; they can do little to improve your current credit rating. A credit counselor is supposed to negotiate with your creditors to reduce your monthly payments and your total debt. You then make one monthly payment to the agency, which is supposed to forward the necessary funds to each of your creditors. If your credit counselor does not forward those payments, or sends them late, you will find yourself deeper in debt while your credit rating sinks even lower.

Some agencies have taken steps to make clients believe their credit rating is improving. A credit counseling agency might send a letter to a credit reporting agency disputing a negative trade-line, and demanding its removal until an investigation is completed. When the entry is deleted, the credit counselor sends the client the cleaned up report claiming success. Unfortunately, when no further information is forthcoming, the negative item will return, making any credit rating increase temporary.

If the information on your credit report is correct, no agency will be able to help you have it removed. Negative information stays on your report for 7 years; bankruptcy for 10. If you have concerns about the information on your credit reports, your best plan is to address those concerns directly with the credit reporting agency in question.

Despite the horror stories, there are some reputable credit counseling agencies out there. If you are considering a credit repair agency, do your research. Find one that is affiliated with national associations and has received positive reviews from other clients and independent reviewers. You can trust a reliable agency to work to remove negative items that are genuine errors from your credit report; anything more is unrealistic.

By George K. Davidsberg

Legitimate credit repair services are losing credibility because of some unscrupulous companies that purposely mislead customers who put their trust in them to help them repair their credit.

It is widely believed that you can repair your own credit without the help of a credit repair service. The only real way to improve your credit rating is to improve your debt-income ratio and to pay your monthly obligations on time. You don’t need a service to help you accomplish this.

What most credit repair counseling services are actually offering you is debt reduction. Using this type of service can actually do more harm than good to your credit rating, as you will end up paying less than the agreed monthly amount and this will result in your payments being reported 30 days late month after month.

Another tactic that credit repair counseling services use is to send to the three credit reporting agencies letters stating that the negative information on your credit report is inaccurate, and demand that they remove this information. Credit reporting agencies are required to remove this information while they investigate the claim that the information is inaccurate. While this investigation is going on the credit repair counseling service pulls your credit report and shows you that your credit score has improved. They then demand payment from you. After this has occurred the investigation at the credit reporting agency will result in the negative information being placed back into your credit file and you are no better off than you were before.

There are some credit repair agencies that are not out to scam you. These agencies will legitimately help you to have incorrect information removed, to have information corrected when you have paid-off items that are still showing past due. They can also help you to have items listed twice removed, or items that are actually your children’s clarified.

When it comes down to it, this is about all a legitimate credit repair agency can do to help you improve your credit. No credit repair counseling agency can have negative items removed if they are correct. These items remain for up to seven years, or even longer.

The best thing to do is to handle your own credit issues. You have the right to contest incorrect information and you are in the best position to know what is correct or incorrect on your credit report.

George Davidsberg routinely writes news stories on topics similar to credit consolidation and credit loan. With his detailed writings such as http://www.creditenio.com, he expressed his skill on topics corresponding to credit counseling.

Should You Use a Credit Repair Counseling Agency or Credit Repair Service
By Harrine Freeman

Over one million people file for personal bankruptcy every year. Consumer debt is a huge problem in America today. As a result, many people don’t know how they got in debt and don’t know where to turn for help. Many people go to credit counseling agencies for assistance.

A credit counseling agency is defined as a company that advises you on managing your money and debt and helps you develop a budget as well as offers free workshops. Some credit agencies or credit repair companies may advise you on managing your money, restore your debt and may develop a budget (spending plan) for you.

When choosing any agency to assist with repairing your credit ask what services are provided based on what your needs are. If you are only concerned with restoring your credit then search for those types of companies. If you are looking for a full service company then look for credit counseling agencies or credit repair service companies.

However, I would use caution when hiring a credit counseling agency or credit repair service. Here are some red flags when considering working with a credit repair counseling agency or a credit repair company:

1.	If a company provides guarantees that they can increase your credit score by a certain amount of points don’t use them. They are no guarantees because information can be removed from your credit report and your credit score will increase but it depends on your credit score, the type of credit that was delinquent, your debt-to-income ratio and many other factors.

2.	Check out the companies’ website and check to see how long the company has been in business.

3.	Check to see what fees are being charged. I charge my customers a one-time flat fee of less than $200. If you have to pay a registration or initial fee and then a monthly fee of X dollars that defeats the whole purpose of getting out of debt.

4.	If you are already working with a credit repair counseling agency or credit repair company ask to see sample letters that will be sent to your creditors. If a company refuses to show you (which most probably will) then you have no idea what was stated in the letter. I give all of my clients companies of the letters I write to repair their credit.

5.	Don’t do business with a company that says they will use rapid credit scoring to repair your credit. This method jams the credit reporting agency system by sending many letters about the same issue for inaccurate and accurate information. The system gets confused and removes the items mentioned in the letter from the person’s credit report. However, the credit reporting agencies do audits of their systems and eventually the items will be put back on your credit report.

6.	Ask the company what is the process they use to restore your credit, if the company does not tell you then don’t use them.

Do you know your credit score? This is an important number to know because it effects whether your application is accepted or rejected when you apply for loans and other forms of credit. If you have experienced bad credit or currently experiencing the stress of bad credit there is no reason to be ashamed. When you are applying for big-ticket items such as a house or a vehicle, the loan company will look immediately at your credit score. If it is below 650 then they will take an in depth look at your credit history to see why it is lower than they prefer. They will look at the types of loans you have taken out and over what period you have had them. In addition, they are looking at is how many revolving credit accounts you have open at the same time and if the balances are at their maximum. Have you made your payments on time and if there are any charges or bankruptcies listed on your report.

If your credit score is low, remember that with good management skills you can repair your credit to a higher standing. Poor credit is only temporary and you can repair it if you are committed to the program that your credit counselor outlines. When looking for assistance in repairing your credit, remember that no one can completely erase bad credit from your credit history. To repair your credit it will take hard work and diligence on your part to follow the plan outlined by a counselor who specializes in credit repair.

When you have chosen a company that offers credit repair counseling services what can you expect. The majority of services will charge a fee. This fee can range from as little as $20 dollars or can cost several hundreds of dollars. One of the first steps that the agency will ask you to do is to get a copy of your credit report. You can, by yourself or with the aide of a counselor, begin to challenge the items on your credit report. Some credit repair companies will ask you to challenge everything on your report whether it is true or not. The result of this type of action is that the credit reporting agency will become overwhelmed with claims to review within an allotted period that they end up removing your information without verifying it. You should be very cautious about this approach as they information can be placed back onto your file when the agency does review it and finds that it is valid. On the other hand, disputing inaccurate information is very important and you should act in diligence to have it removed. A period of 7 to 10 years, required by law that the information stays on your report, after this time then removed.

The other services that credit repair services offer our methods to control your spending and paying off debts in a manner that will lead to become debt free. It is important to do your researches carefully before you choose a service that provides credit repair counseling.

Repair Your Own Credit - It’s Easier Than You Think!
By Thomas Dolan

Attention – anyone sick and tired of being imprisoned by bad credit now is the time to arm yourself with valuable information to make major changes! Unfortunately, many people still think the only way to repair credit is to hire a lawyer or work with a credit repair business. The problem is that attorneys are extensive and the majority of credit repair companies are nothing but scams (there are a few legit services, but they tend to be few and far between). The good news is that you can repair your credit on your own and get excellent results.

The process to repair your credit is actually much easier than you might think. People generally shy away from this because they fear it will be a long, drawn out process, much too difficult to handle. However, in truth, the process is easy once you know how it all works. The first thing you will need to learn is what your credit report is saying. For this, you need to contact all three reporting agencies. Keep in mind that credit bureaus report information from
different creditors. In other words, they will all be reporting slightly different information, which is why you need to review all of the reports, not just one.

You can order a copy of your credit report online or through the mail. The following is the information you would need:

Equifax Credit Information Services, Inc.

P.O. Box 740241

Atlanta, GA. 30374

(800) 685-1111

www.Equifax.com

Trans Union LLC

Consumer Disclosure Center

P.O. Box 1000

Chester, PA 19022

(800) 888-4213

www.Transunion.com

Experian

National Consumer Assistance Center

P.O. Box 949

Allen, TX 75013

(888) EXPERIAN

www.Experian.com

Once you receive your copy, you need to go through each item very carefully, looking for inaccuracies. For example, you may notice an account listed as open, which was actually closed or you might find an account that is not even yours. Therefore, look for erroneous, misleading, out-of-date, or inaccurate information. Once you have identified errors, you would file a formal dispute to the respective credit bureau.

To repair your credit, that is really how simple it is. The key to success is two things – documentation and follow up. When you file your dispute, we strongly recommend you also include any documentation of proof, which will give
you a much better chance of getting the corrections done right. Then after you file your formal dispute, you will receive an updated copy of the credit report. Rather than assume everything is perfect, go over the new report again. Many times, a second dispute is required so do not get frustrated just expect that a second dispute will likely be required.

The thing to remember is that the steps to repair you credit does not require any kind of special training or knowledge. You do not have to be an accountant or CPA, all you need is a copy of your credit report and the correct dispute letter. The truth is that while you will find all types of advertisements from lawyers and credit repair companies, no one can repair your credit as well as you can.

4 Ways to Avoid Credit Repair Scams
By Lady Charles

Many people find out too late – at the exact moment when they need to rely on their credit – that their score falls short of what a lender would like to see. When you’re desperate for a quick fix is when scam artists present you with a credit repair claim that looks too good to be true.

One common scam that’s prevalent on the web today are the ones that claim they know people within the bureaus that they can sweet talk into deleting unsatisfactory items from your reports.

They may know people that work within the agencies, but no one is going to risk their job to erase things from your record just because someone asked them to do it for a stranger.

The only time anything can get fixed on a credit report is when something is verified to be incorrect. But those you can take care of yourself. All you have to do is report is and if it’s determined that it truly is an error, it will get fixed.

Companies that state this claim to you are more likely to take your money and run. No company is allowed to take money until they’ve actually done what they’ve promised to do.

Another common scam is when a company tells you that they know how to convince the bureaus that you don’t really owe a particular debt. The truth is, if you really owe the debt, then there’s nothing that can be done.

The company that tells you this will either take the money and run or will make a weak attempt at a resolution and then charge you anyway. No debt can be erased from a record unless it’s proven to be false or it’s too old for it to be still listed on the reports.

Another common scam to look out for is companies that say they can change the whole credit file into one good clean one. Sorry, it won’t really happen. Your debts will remain on there and any activity you do will be reported on it.

There’s no true way to get a clean record without paying off your debts and paying bills on time. There are some companies that are even offering loans with their credit repair services.

Don’t fall for that. A legitimate company will repair what truly needs to be repaired and that’s it. If you need a loan, that should be done by you. Look out for the 900 number scams.

If a company tells you to call a 900 number to find more information on their services, then look elsewhere. The 900 numbers will charge you per minute for the phone call.

There are companies out there that will fix incorrect items on your credit reports, but it’s best to try to fix those on your own. All you have to do is report the error via letter or email and the agency will investigate and correct your report for you.

You can find ads everywhere selling systems, programs and ways to help you fix your credit in a hurry. Most of these ads seem to enjoy leading with such ludicrous statements like “My credit score jumped 300 points in only 3 hours” or “Smash your debt with only 2 letters” or even “Create a new credit file in only a couple of hours”. It makes you wonder if any of these claims are too good to be true. Well let me say that the answer is both true and false that ALL of these letters seem too good to true.

While many people tend to think that the only thing that can actually fix credit is time, in reality, there are a ton of things out there that can help you to repair your credit score yourself. Time is only one piece in the big puzzle that is credit score repair today. Many different tips and techniques can be applied and all that is required from someone is a little education to fix a credit score or simply raise it to where you want it to be.

Even the Federal Trade Commission states that “anything a credit repair clinic can do for you legally, you can do for yourself at little or no cost”. The key element to anyone’s success seems to be knowing the latest inside techniques and procedures that these credit repair companies use. These involve strategies that have been used for years by credit repair agencies and bureaus to fix consumers credit. Strategies that have become known by names like “Proof of Contract”, “Challenge of Procedure” or “Constructive Notice” are just a few, there are many others.

Even though these terms may sound impressive to the layperson, they are nothing but simple really. What it all boils down to is nothing more than a method of communication that exercises your consumer protection rights and helps consumers to get the results they want. The Federal Trade Commission along with the Credit Rules and Acts set forth by our government are written to aid the consumer and are “pro-consumer” or written for the average person not the Credit Reporting Agencies. Really the rules and acts were written to “Protect” the consumer from these agencies and any unfair practices used by them.

While many people would love to keep you believing that time is the only thing to change your credit score, it is good that obviously you have proved, by reading this article, that you want more information and are willing to educate yourself and fix your own credit score now. Even though the “actual work” for fixing your credit report will take very little of your time, it is vitally important that the information that you use and arm yourself with is good and how you go about it is using the correct techniques.

9 out of 10 courses on restoring your credit will do nothing but lead you into the bureaus snake pit. Once there, it is hard to get out or help yourself at all. Understanding that the [http://www.yourcreditscoresecrets.com/article10.html ]Fair Credit Reporting Act, a consumer protection law, which states that “the only negative information which can remain on your credit report is not what is accurate, but what can be PROVED as such” is the first step to understanding what these credit repair companies don’t want you to know.

This is the tool and technique that the 9 out of 10 books will try to help you use, by sending out letters and communication, to try and remove your negative items and improve your score. Under the guidelines of the FCRA, it is definetely hard for these credit bureaus to Prove something as accurate. This works very well for consumers when fixing their scores, but lures people to these self-help books claiming to fix your credit fast, without any real meaningful data. There are books and programs out there that can help you, just make sure you don’t go out and buy the first “cheap” one out there just to find out the information is outdated and never really worked for anyone.

When using one of these credit repair schemes from the wrong book, consumers tend to use the outdated “boiler-plate” dispute letters to help with removing negative items. These letters tend to be outdated and are rarely effective. Nothing more than form letters, these techniques quite frankly may give the credit bureaus and creditors a good laugh at your attempts. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are definetely programs out there which can help the average layperson to fix their own credit and do it the right way. These programs are harder to find, but the good news is that it is for a reason.

The good credit report programs that help you to do-it-yourself are out there, they are just not as cheesy and cheap as the others. If you can find a good program for around $10 on how to fix your own credit, it is no wonder that it is only $10.

Anything that is going to really help you would be worth it and show testimonials from happy customers, have been around for a long time and prove with the information it provides in the sales form, that it is different from the rest and contains some actual knowledge. A good credit report repair program will also offer a money back guarantee and support information as well.

By Ronald Earl Alger Jr.

Although credit reporting information is very important, it is surprising how many people do not understand it. When I was in graduate school, I was looking for a job I could do that would allow me the flexibility I needed to attend classes. After conducting a lot of research into several different home business opportunities, I stumbled across a credit repair home business. Here I was going to school with the hopes of one day owning my own business. This was my chance, so I took it. I was now a proud business owner.

As it turns out, I learned a lot about bad credit, FICO score, and credit repair strategies. In some instances, people were in such financial devastating situations that they could not afford to hire me one-on-one to help them. So I began to teach classes over the telephone on how to become a credit repair whiz. One of my students was a full time mom. After giving birth to twin boys her husband was forced to work two jobs to pay the extra expenses. This mom desperately wanted to repair the family credit and also was eager to contribute financially, relieving some of the financial pressure, so the boys could spend time with their dad. This mompreneur, in her effort to help others, created a business she worked at her convenience and rewarded her financially allowing her husband to quit his second job.

I spent many years helping thousands of people and I feel fortunate to have had that opportunity. That very work launched me into creating many other successful home businesses. The education I have received from working at home could never have been gleaned from any graduate program. After years of experience, research, and helping people start a credit repair business, I have compiled a list of 10 facts about credit reports that everyone should know:

1. Over 80 million Americans are struggling with bad credit.
2. 50 % of people never check their credit reports.
3. Only 1 in 5 people know their credit score.
4. With over 2 million foreclosures annually. A foreclosure is sudden death to
someone’s credit rating!
5. The ideal credit score is 720 or higher.
6. You have three credit scores (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion)
7. Your credit score is based on the information in your credit report.
8. 1 in 3 people have errors on their credit reports.
9. You are entitled to a FREE credit report annually.
10. Credit repair is not rocket science AND bankruptcies do get removed early!

Your credit report is a very important document. Most of what you do is tied to your credit score so protect it with a vengeance. Don’t wait until you need credit to find out what is on your credit report. Be proactive and check it often. Many services will notify you through email if there is a change on your credit report.

Credit repair specialists can be of help to you if you notice that there are inaccuracies in your credit report. It is important for everyone to review his/her credit report at least once a year to verify that the information it contains is correct. You can get the free report from one of the 3 major credit bureaus, or even all three if you wish. Once you notice a discrepancy that is detrimental to your credit, you have to take steps to repair it. This is where credit repair specialists can help you.

Before you contact a credit repair specialist about mistakes in your credit report, you have to make sure that you are correct when you say this is a bill you don’t owe. The specialists cannot wipe out any unfavourable items from your credit report just on your say so. If you need credit repair help for your bad credit rating, then it is only you who can do that.

Credit repair specialists will take a look at your credit report. If the report says you have a bill outstanding, for example, you do need to provide proof that you have repaid the amount in full. You have to verify all your claims of mistakes. If the bills named in the report are legitimate, then they are your responsibility. In order to have an item removed from a credit report, it has to go through legal channels, but the specialists will help you with this.

You don’t have to contact credit repair specialists if you do notice a mistake in your credit report. These people do take the work off your shoulders, but you can do it yourself. All you have to do is contact the credit bureau that supplied you with the report and notify them of the mistake. They will send you the appropriate forms to fill out and give you instructions as to how you should proceed. It doesn’t cost any money to take this route and do your own credit repair. Help is readily available from the 3 major credit bureaus and is free for you to use. Although credit repair specialists are trained for this job, you do have to pay for their help. Why pay, when you can do it yourself?

Credit repair specialists can help, but you can do it all yourself.

Credit repair or counseling agencies may be dangerous to your fiscal well-being.

“Credit Counseling” and “Commercial Counseling” services are two completely different things. Before you sign any papers that end up causing you even more financial harm, you better know whom you are dealing with!

Whereas credit counseling services are generally non-profit, commercial counseling services (clinics) may charge you 10%-15% or more of your total debt, with a $300 upfront fee being typical. Meanwhile, the services provided by the non-profit agency are basically the same as for profit organizations, and neither can guarantee results.

Just about everyone at one time or another has experienced some kind of problem with their cash flow. That is when it becomes difficult to pay the monthly bills and keep up with credit obligations. When that happens, damaging information may begin to appear in your credit file, and bad times can become even worse.

For many people it becomes difficult, if not impossible to obtain any further credit, just when there is a desperate need for it. Unfortunately, banks, lenders, and other creditors do not extend credit on the basis of need. Credit can swiftly be taken away from anyone who cannot demonstrate they are a good credit risk.

Most people can be successful in overcoming credit rejections that have resulted due to damaging information showing up on a credit report. The problem that most people run into is that they become desperate and will resort to anything and anyone that comes along with false promises. Then they find themselves in deeper trouble because they’ve handed out more money they don’t have, to a crook who gives them nothing in return.

Giving yourself a grand-slam, clean-credit slate doesn’t happen by accident. There are a number of techniques and methods that can be utilized to create or restore a good credit record.

The following information is being provided to you on the basis that it has proven successful for some people. None of the information is being recommended as techniques you should use. If you decide to use any of the information contained in this report, it is recommended that you first consult with an attorney to obtain legal advice.

The best advice on the subject of credit repair comes from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). According to the FTC, marketing claims such as those listed below are almost always scams, or outright misleading:

· “Credit problems? No problem!”

· “We can erase your bad credit — 100% guaranteed.”

· “Create a new credit identity — legally.”

· “We can remove bankruptcies, judgments, liens, and bad loans from your credit file forever!”

The FTC suggests you do yourself a favor and hold on to your money. It sounds depressing, and may be a bit discouraging, but true credit repair takes time and a conscious effort to repay debts in a timely manner. Sadly, many people end up paying hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to so-called credit repair agencies, only to find themselves in the same boat they were before hiring the repair agency.

If you can’t be swayed to avoid working with a credit repair agency, at the very least, heed the following warning from the FTC:

· companies that want you to pay for credit repair services before they provide any services.

· companies that do not tell you your legal rights and what you can do for yourself for free.

· companies that recommend that you not contact a credit reporting company directly.

· companies that suggest that you try to invent a “new” credit identity — and then, a new credit report — by applying for an Employer Identification Number to use instead of your Social Security number.

· companies that advise you to dispute all information in your credit report or take any action that seems illegal, like creating a new credit identity. If you follow illegal advice and commit fraud, you may be subject to prosecution.

Bear in mind, playing games with the credit bureaus is serious business, and may cause you to incur an expensive and possibly freedom restricting trial. In other words, changing your identity, using fake Social Security numbers, etc, are fraudulent acts that the federal government frowns on. Also, if you use the phone or mail to apply for credit under less than honest circumstances, you may also be prosecuted for mail or wire fraud. Nasty stuff—federal prosecution.
